Studied Fine Art at the University of Brighton and Chelsea College of Art.

Toby Tatum's films have been exhibited at numerous film festivals and arts events worldwide, including Rotterdam International Film Festival, London Short Film Festival, Berwick Upon Tweed Film & Media Arts Festival, Swedenborg Film Festival, Stuttgarter Filmwinter, Alchemy Film & Moving Image Festival, Chicago Underground Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival.

Toby Tatum curated and contributed to Underground Worlds (2011) and Paradise Found (2013), two programmes of film and video work which screened at the Electric Palace Cinema in Hastings, UK. In 2015 Toby Tatum was commissioned by Coastal Currents Arts Festival 2015 to curate Altered States, an immersive exhibition of visionary experimental film at the Electro Studios Project Space in St. Leonards-on-Sea, UK.

Toby Tatum's Mental Space was awarded BEST FILM at the March 2016 Swedenborg Film Festival. The prize was presented by festival judge Bridget Smith. Daphne Rosenthal shared the top prize for her film Meanwhile, Looking Elsewhere

The Toby Tatum Guide to Grottoes & Groves was also awarded BEST FILM at the November 2016 Swedenborg Film Festival, sharing the top prize with Harold Charre and his film Savagery. The prize was judged and awarded by the visionary film-maker Andrew Kötting, who said: "I really enjoyed this work – animistic and phantomic – hidden presences and trace elements – voices coaxed out of the frame by very subtle light and shadow play – as part of a large projection/expanded cinematic experience the work has enormous potential."
